Sensory Play
Spooky Spaghetti!
There are so many benefits to sensory play such as:
- Helping children understand how their actions affect what’s around them.
- Supporting brain development, enhancing memory, complex tasks and problem solving.
- Developing fine motor skills through tactile play (useful when children want to hold a pen or use scissors for example).
- Supporting language development, communication and social skills.
- Enhancing memory and observational skills.
- Encouraging creative and independent thinking.
- Emotional regulation by providing a calming effect on children’s angry or anxious feelings.
It is estimated that up to 95 % of neurodiverse pupils experience sensory differences. Difficulties regulating and understanding these senses can affect how pupils feel, behave, and respond to people, environments, or situations. Our aim is to help pupils regulate their sensory systems to a level where they feel comfortable, relaxed, ready to engage, communicate and thrive. Which is why we make it a part of every day in The Hive.
We love the parachute!
We have been discovering how we like to play and explore outside. One of our new favourites is the parachute! This week we have used the parachute to explore signs of autumn. We used team work to collect lots of crunchy, brown leaves from the playground and dropped them into the parachute. We like watching as they fell and swirled until they hit the bottom. Then, READY, STEADY GO! There were lots of laughs, giggles and wow moments. Then we set off collecting leaves for another go.
Schools Library Service Sensory Stories
We have enjoyed our first sensory story of the year from our friends at the Schools Library Service. They will come to The Hive each half term and tell us a sensory story with props, sound effects, actions, smells and puppets. We really enjoy it!
We received a letter from Granny and got busy sweeping, dusting, and cleaning to make the house sparkle before she arrived. When Granny finally came, we welcomed her in for a lovely cup of tea! The story was full of sights, sounds, and textures that made it come alive — a perfect way to explore what makes a home warm and welcoming
